The National Commission on Sleep Disorders Research was establishedby Congress in 1988 "to conduct a comprehensive study of sleepdisorders and to develop a long-range plan for the use and organizationof national resources to deal effectively with sleep disordersresearch and medicine"1. The report of the commission, whichwas recently published,1 indicates that each year the livesof millions of Americans are disturbed, disrupted, or destroyedby the consequences of sleep disorders.
Among specific sleep disorders, the most serious in terms ofmorbidity and mortality is obstructive sleep apnea2. This disorderis characterized by recurrent episodes . . . [Full Text of this Article]
