The National Commission on Sleep Disorders Research was established by Congress in 1988 "to conduct a comprehensive study of sleep disorders and to develop a long-range plan for the use and organization of national resources to deal effectively with sleep disorders research and medicine"¹. The report of the commission, which was recently published,¹ indicates that each year the lives of millions of Americans are disturbed, disrupted, or destroyed by the consequences of sleep disorders.
