To the Editor: Dr. Peter's review of childhood immunizations in the United States (Dec. 17 issue)¹ mentions policies that differ from those of the World Health Organization (WHO), especially with respect to immunization against cholera and poliomyelitis. We wish to clarify these differences.

The WHO does not recommend cholera vaccine for travelers, and no country requires it for entry². The only available cholera vaccine is of low efficacy and provides at best only short-term immunity. Immunization against cholera may impart a false sense of security, making travelers less likely to use more effective protective measures³.
