Endometriosis is a common disorder, yet it is among the mostenigmatic of gynecologic diseases. The literature on endometriosisis extensive, though often contradictory or inadequate, andreflects our frequent inability to decipher even the most fundamentalaspects of common diseases. Recent studies have produced newinsights into this complex disorder, however.
In this review we shall critically evaluate what we know --and do not know -- about endometriosis. Established facts willbe separated from unsupported impressions, and areas of controversywill be highlighted.
