Before they participate in a screening program, patients mustgive informed consent. To do so, they need to understand therisk of a false positive result and the invasive proceduresthat may follow it. Rather than merely transmit expert recommendations,physicians should match the appropriate level of screening witheach patient's unique attitude toward the risks of disease andthe risks associated with the screening procedures.
