Neurologic deficits remain the most dreaded of complicationsafter cardiac surgery. In the past, analyses of outcomes aftercardiac surgery have concentrated on survival. Now that techniquesof myocardial protection and cardiopulmonary bypass have beenrefined, emphasis is being placed on improving the quality oflife after cardiac surgery1.
