Acyclovir has been widely used over the past decade as an effectiveand safe drug for the treatment of infections with herpes simplexvirus type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2)1. Resistance to acyclovirwas initially noted only in studies of HSV infection in vitroand in animal models,2,3,4 then it was found in immunocompromisedpatients, and it has now become a well-documented clinical challengeto the care of patients infected with the human immunodeficiencyvirus (HIV)4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12. Acyclovir resistance has notbeen a problem to date in the treatment of immunocompetent peoplewith HSV infection. Although we identified . . . [Full Text of this Article]
