Medical science is a source of both sadness and joy in our society. People express gratitude for technological advances -- and in the same breath worry about the cost and consequences of their use. Such ambivalence is one of the reasons for the recent intense interest in bioethics. We are not quite sure how to apply our new-found powers.

This small book does not pretend to be the ultimate guide. It is a collection of nine essays, most of which originated as lectures at King's College in London. The book has a distinctively British flavor.
