In speaking about the role of alcohol in society, Abraham Lincoln observed, "None seemed to think the injury arose from the use of a bad thing but from the abuse of a very good thing." The article by Gaziano et al.1 in this issue of the Journal again raises the question whether, from the standpoint of one's health, moderate consumption of alcoholic beverages, usually defined as up to two standard drinks per day, is a good thing.
