The authors of this textbook, representing almost exclusively the staff of the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, have produced a reference work on otology based on the experience of that institution. This approach has several benefits for the reader and an occasional drawback. A fairly uniform stance is adopted, which reflects the philosophy of management established at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. The book flows evenly from one chapter to the next without the glaring inconsistencies and deficiencies that often mar multiple-author textbooks.
