Herpes zoster (shingles) is an acute infection of the dorsal-rootganglia and skin caused by a reactivation of varicella-zostervirus, the cause of chickenpox. It is characterized by painand vesicles on an erythematous base limited to one to threedermatomes. In immunocompromised persons, widespread viral infectionof skin (disseminated zoster) and viscera may lead to fatalpneumonitis, hepatitis, or encephalitis.
