Children with chronic illness or disability constitute almost a fourth of our total population of children. Of the 20 to 35 million children in the United States with chronic health conditions, 10 to 15 percent have problems severe enough to interfere with everyday activities and to require some daily assistance. In adults relatively few categories of chronic disease affect large numbers of people, whereas in children a large number of chronic conditions disable smaller numbers. Therefore, the nutritional problems of chronically ill children, as compared with those affecting adults, must involve a wide variety of issues.
