Adjuvant chemotherapy given after elimination of all macroscopic disease by surgery is now standard therapy for patients with selected solid tumors, such as node-positive colon cancer and breast cancer. Durable local control is usually achieved with primary treatment (surgery with or without radiation therapy) and may be augmented by systemic adjuvant therapy. However, the main target of the chemotherapy is imperceptible metastatic disease that is unaffected by the potentially curative local and regional treatment.
