The retina, the transparent neural tissue lining the interiorof the eye, is the initial receptor for visual stimuli. Excitingprogress has been made in many areas of retinal investigation,from genetic breakthroughs in retinoblastoma and retinitis pigmentosato sophistication in the medical and surgical therapy of retinaldiseases. This article reviews recent clinical developmentsin diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, retinal manifestationsof the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), and age-relatedmacular degeneration.
