The specialty of clinical electrophysiology has evolved over the past two decades from an esoteric, predominantly investigative subspecialty to one that offers important therapeutic interventions for a variety of cardiac arrhythmias. As a consequence, physicians caring for patients with arrhythmias must be familiar with the principles of clinical cardiac electrophysiology in order to identify patients who might benefit from referral to an electrophysiologist and to educate patients about the available therapeutic options.
