To the Editor: Lipton and Rosenberg (March 3 issue)¹ explored the role of excitatory amino acids as a final common pathway for neurologic disorders. Their findings rekindle the question of the effect of ingestion of neurotoxic amino acids on neurologic disorders associated with endogenous neurotoxic amino acids.

The question of the role of exogenous neurotoxic amino acids was first raised by Olney in 1969². The food industry has since removed monosodium glutamate from baby food, and consumers have continued to submit reports of adverse reactions to the additive to the Food and Drug Administration's Adverse Reactions Monitoring System.
