To the Editor: We disagree with the conclusion of Lenderking et al. (March 17 issue)1 that the side effects of zidovudine make its use questionable in patients who have asymptomatic human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. The most striking finding of the study was that there was no difference in symptomatic adverse events between the placebo group and the group treated with the recommended daily dose of 500 mg of zidovudine. The only difference was in "metabolic abnormalities" observed on laboratory analysis.
