To the Editor: The recent papers by Cao et al.¹ and Pantaleo et al.² (Jan. 26 issue) focus on characteristics of long-term survivors of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection. The authors quantitated HIV-1 in plasma with a modification of the branched-DNA signal-amplification assay and a competitive reverse transcriptase–polymerase-chain-reaction (PCR) assay, respectively.
