A 29-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and multiple splenic abscesses.
The patient was homosexual and had been found to have AIDS two and a half years earlier; at that time the CD4 cell count was 173 per cubic millimeter. He had a positive serologic test for cytomegalovirus antibodies and negative serologic tests for syphilis, toxoplasma, and hepatitis B surface antigen and antibody; he was anergic to tuberculin.
