The use of direct DNA-based testing in forensic analysis has become increasingly common. In the past, genetic identity or similarity could be inferred by comparison of ABO blood groups and other protein-based measurements. These measures are sufficiently variable within the population to permit a reasonable test of identity between different samples. However, there are two major advantages to direct DNA testing. First, it makes use of many more variables, thus strengthening the significance of a match between specimens. Second, the physical stability of DNA makes it possible to analyze minute amounts of forensic material many years after a criminal incident.
