A 14-year-old boy with a weight loss of 15 kg over a three-month period presented with clinical signs of dermatomyositis, including typical edematous rash, muscular weakness, and pharyngeal involvement. A considerable increase in muscle-enzyme concentrations was noted, and an immunodiffusion assay and Western blotting were positive for antinuclear antibodies of unknown specificity at a titer of 1:4000.
