To the Editor: Bryson and colleagues report the spontaneous clearance of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in a baby (March 30 issue).1 Unfortunately, spontaneous clearance seems to be rare, and we have not observed it in any of 180 babies born to seropositive mothers.2 We tested for the presence of HIV in these infants two to four times during the first two months of life by means of polymerase-chain-reaction (PCR) testing of peripheral-blood mononuclear cells and HIV culture.
