There is bad news and some good news about the pneumococcus. The study by Hofmann et al. in this issue of the Journal1 is a chilling reminder that the United States is no longer safe from the spread of penicillin-resistant and multidrug-resistant pneumococci. Fortunately, the mortality rate from pneumococcal pneumonia, according to the study by Pallares et al.,2 also in this issue, appears to be the same whether infections are caused by sensitive strains or resistant strains.
