To the Editor: The report by McKenzie et al. (Oct. 26 issue)1 entitled "Hepatic Failure and Lactic Acidosis Due to Fialuridine (FIAU), an Investigational Nucleoside Analogue for Chronic Hepatitis B" is deeply troubling to those who treat chronic viral infections with nucleoside analogues. I am particularly concerned by the selection of some of the patients in the study. According to the text, only 8 of the 15 patients (all of whom had uncomplicated chronic hepatitis B and were positive for hepatitis B surface antigen and e antigen) had been previously treated with interferon, and some had received other nucleoside analogues . . .
