Since the birth of immunology in the late 1800s, physicians interested in the eye have recognized the importance of identifying immunologic mechanisms to the understanding of ocular disorders. The editors of Ocular Infection and Immunity provide an excellent review of the historical backdrop against which links between ophthalmology and immunology have evolved into the field of immuno-ophthalmology. The goals of this young specialty have focused on the application of immunology to further the understanding and treatment of ocular disorders.
