Although the function of the paranasal sinuses remains unknown, we know that they are susceptible to disease and a major cause of misery for patients. The influence of sinusitis on health is only beginning to be recognized. It is estimated that 30 million Americans suffer from sinus disease, missing 200 million days of work each year and spending $5 billion on medications, doctors' visits, imaging studies, and surgery each year. Though these estimates can be challenged, the enormous scope of the problem is apparent.
