A 31-year-old woman with a documented first pregnancy of four weeks' duration was admitted to the hospital because of severe pain in the left lower quadrant of the abdomen, nausea, and vomiting.
The patient had been well until 9 p.m. on the evening before admission, when she suddenly had acute pain in the left lower quadrant and became pale. Nausea and vomiting occurred on four occasions. She came to the hospital at approximately 5 a.m.
The patient had been exposed to diethylstilbestrol (DES) in utero. She had been infertile, with cervical stenosis after cervical biopsies and laser treatment for intraepithelial
