Abnormalities of glucose, insulin, and lipoprotein metabolismare common in patients with hypertension. These changes canalso be discerned in normotensive first-degree relatives ofhypertensive patients. They are not present in patients withsecondary forms of hypertension, do not necessarily improvewhen blood pressure is lowered pharmacologically, and may evenbe made worse by some forms of antihypertensive treatment.
