For nearly three years we have known that zidovudine is efficaciousin preventing transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus(HIV) from mother to infant.1 A randomized, placebo-controlledtrial, AIDS Clinical Trials Group Protocol 076, establisheda new standard of care for pregnant women with HIV type 1 infection.This issue of the Journal includes the report by Sperling etal. of an analysis of Protocol 076 after 402 motherinfantpairs were followed for 18 months.2 During that period, 15 infantsin the zidovudine group (7.6 percent) and 46 infants in theplacebo group (22.6 percent) were found to be infected. . . .
