The measurement of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in serum is the most useful tool available today for the diagnosis of early, curable adenocarcinoma of the prostate.1 This issue of the Journal contains the results of a well-conducted investigation of serum PSA concentrations in black men 40 to 79 years of age.2 Previous investigations have examined serum PSA in white3 and Japanese4 men, but this study is the first to address the subject in blacks, the population with the highest prevalence of prostate cancer, the earliest age at its onset, and the greatest mortality rate from the disease.
