To the Editor: I was surprised that for the study by Stoute et al. (Jan. 9 issue),1 in which human subjects were intentionally infected with a known disease-producing agent, we are told only that the study was "approved by an institutional review board." Which one? Were the subjects prisoners? Soldiers? Were they from another country, or paid to participate? Having been a member of an institutional review board for many years, I have been involved with studies rejected for far less important ethical reasons.
