The problem of drowsiness in commercial truck drivers has receivedconsiderable attention. Many people believe that drowsy truckersare only the most obvious example of sleep-deprived workersin all forms of transportation and in many different jobs. Inthis issue of the Journal, Mitler et al.1 report the resultsof recording electroencephalograms and videotaping 80 long-haultruckers continuously while they drove. The study provides convincingevidence that the drivers obtained less sleep than was requiredfor alertness on the job.
