Violence has become a major issue in the lives of children in the United States. Its effects on their physical and mental health have created a real need to understand the extent of the problem, its implications for children's health, and strategies for reducing exposures to violence and responding to them. An extensive literature is beginning to develop on the subject; one of the more recent books is Children in a Violent Society.
