To the Editor: Guilhot et al. (July 24 issue)1 should be complimented for their study of the treatment of chronic myelogenous leukemia. However, we were impressed by the toxicity of combination therapy with cytarabine and interferon alfa-2b. Their results suggest that an additional 15 percent of patients (18 of 118) given interferon alfa-2b alone can achieve a major cytogenetic response when crossed over to combination therapy. These patients were selected because they did not achieve a complete hematologic response after six months of therapy with interferon alfa-2b alone.
