Presentation of Case

A newborn girl was admitted to the intensive care unit because of premature birth and congenital ascites.

The infant was born to a 27-year-old woman after a gestation of 28 weeks and 3 days. The pregnancy, which was the woman's first, was uneventful until the onset of lower abdominal pain three days before admission. An ultrasonogram at her local hospital showed the presence of fetal hydrops. An umbilical-blood specimen obtained percutaneously showed a fetal white-cell count of 2700 per cubic millimeter, a hematocrit of 31.3 percent, and a platelet count of 258,000 per cubic millimeter.
