Injuries are the most common cause of death among people 1 to 34 years of age, a leading cause of disability and years of life lost, and a major contributor to health care costs. There have been dramatic reductions in injury-associated mortality since the turn of the century, largely because of a decrease in the proportion of workers involved in dangerous occupations as well as improvements in the safety of buildings, motor vehicles, roads, and everyday products.
