To the Editor: With respect to the article by Darling et al. (Aug. 28 issue)1 on the effects of hormone-replacement therapy and simvastatin in postmenopausal women with hypercholesterolemia: We carried out a study in which we assessed the effects of the combination of these two therapies. A total of 71 women with hypercholesterolemia (mean [±SD] age, 53±4 years) were recruited. The initial phase of the study consisted of three months of hormone-replacement therapy and a cholesterol-lowering diet, which resulted in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels of less than 160 mg per deciliter in 15 of the women (21 percent).
