Combination treatments with agents that inhibit protease andreverse transcriptase of human immunodeficiency virus type 1(HIV-1) decrease mortality and slow disease progression.1 Thedevelopment of resistance to these drugs, however, limits thebenefit of such treatments.2,3 There have been reports of thetransmission of HIV-1 variants that are resistant to nucleosideand non-nucleoside inhibitors of reverse transcriptase.4,5,6,7,8,9The transmission of HIV-1 variants that are resistant to proteaseinhibitors could represent an important emerging clinical andpublic health problem.
