The myelodysplastic syndromes are clonal hematologic disorderscharacterized clinically and morphologically by ineffectivehematopoiesis. The natural history of these syndromes rangesfrom a chronic course that may span years to a rapid courseof leukemic progression. Unfortunately, the nomenclature andclassification systems used to describe these conditions arecumbersome and contentious. Nonetheless, myelodysplastic syndromesare viewed by most hematologists as encompassing stages of neoplastichematopoiesis associated with cytopenias and as excluding nonneoplasticconditions.
