To the Editor: The study by Weinblatt et al. (Jan. 28 issue)1 attempts to demonstrate the efficacy of combined therapy with methotrexate and etanercept through a randomized, double-blind trial. This study design is powerful, but a prerequisite is that the patients assigned to treatment and those assigned to placebo must have equal probabilities of achieving the primary end point — in this case, the American College of Rheumatology criteria for a 20 percent improvement in measures of disease activity.
