Nosocomial pneumonia is a leading cause of death from hospital-acquiredinfections, with an associated crude mortality rate of approximately30 percent.1 Ventilator-associated pneumonia refers specificallyto nosocomial bacterial pneumonia that has developed in patientswho are receiving mechanical ventilation.
