Presentation of Case

A 34-year-old woman was referred to a hospital in Texas because of an intermittent cough and hemoptysis.

The patient had been well until nine months earlier, when her temperature rose to 39.4°C. Subsequently, she had a low-grade fever, which eventually resolved, and an intermittent cough. One month later, she consulted a physician after she had coughed up a small amount of blood while exercising. Physical examination was normal; no radiographs were obtained. She was given a cough preparation for "bronchitis."
