To the Editor: As a surgeon I am disturbed by the study by Lau et al. (March 11 issue),¹ which compared endoscopic methods of the late 1990s with surgical practices of the 1970s for the management of recurrent bleeding after initial endoscopic control of bleeding ulcers. I have two basic questions about the study.

First, was the use of the American Society of Anesthesiology grading system to assess the risk of surgical procedures appropriate?
