A three-week-old girl was admitted to the hospital for the treatment of hypertrophic pyloric stenosis.
The infant had been delivered by cesarean section because of an abnormal fetal-heart tracing. She was born at 39 weeks' gestation to a 38-year-old woman (gravida 5, para 2). There were no maternal risk factors for sepsis, and the prenatal screening tests were unremarkable. Hydramnios was noted on a fetal ultrasonographic study performed eight days before delivery.
