To the Editor: Singhal et al. (Nov. 18 issue)1 report the results of a phase 2 study of thalidomide for the treatment of multiple myeloma and conclude that the drug can reduce serum and urine levels of paraprotein in some patients with refractory multiple myeloma. We are concerned that the maximal tolerated dose of thalidomide was not clarified in this study.

Thalidomide was started at a dose of 200 mg per day, and the dose was increased by 200 mg every two weeks, until a dose of 800 mg per day was reached. It is surprising that only 55 percent . . . [Full Text of this Article]
