To the Editor: Lipscomb et al. (Dec. 23 issue)1 report on predictors of the success of methotrexate treatment in women with tubal ectopic pregnancies. In their study, ectopic pregnancy was diagnosed with the use of an algorithm incorporating measurements of serum chorionic gonadotropin and progesterone and the results of transvaginal ultrasonography. A single dose of methotrexate was offered to hemodynamically stable women who did not have free fluid outside the pelvic cavity, as determined by ultrasonography; who agreed to make weekly follow-up visits; who did not have renal, hepatic, or hematologic disease; and who did not desire surgical therapy.
