To the Editor: It is surprising that in the article by Hutchins et al. on the underrepresentation of patients 65 years of age or older in trials of cancer treatment (Dec. 30 issue),1 Table 1 shows that only 42 percent of persons enrolled in the Southwest Oncology Group trials were men. This figure is almost identical to the participation rate for men reported in an earlier analysis of National Cancer Institute trials (43 percent).2 It is cause for concern that the authors do not mention the fact that their trials include only one man with prostate cancer for every five . . .
