To the Editor: Leitzmann et al. (Sept. 9 issue)1 found that in women, recreational physical activity is associated with a decreased risk of cholecystectomy. Drawing firm conclusions about gallstone disease from cholecystectomy rates is problematic, since as the authors point out, the majority of patients with gallstones are asymptomatic. Rates of cholecystectomy vary between and within countries, apparently without relation to the prevalence of gallstones.2 Women who are physically active in their leisure time are likely to be from socioeconomically advantaged groups and to have higher levels of education3 and self-confidence4 than their sedentary peers.
