To the Editor: In his article on AIDS in the 21st century, Fauci (Sept. 30 issue)1 correctly points out that the origins and propagation of the AIDS epidemic are intimately linked to the social and demographic conditions favoring an ecologic niche for such an infectious agent. However, in emphasizing the importance of the epidemic to humankind, his understandable intense focus on biomedical solutions eclipses the increasingly acknowledged need to address the conditions favoring the emergence and propagation of such new diseases.
