To the Editor: The report by Winawer et al. (June 15 issue)1 on the sensitivity of double-contrast barium enema for detecting colonic adenomas requires comment. The overall sensitivity of double-contrast barium enema was 39 percent, with a sensitivity of 48 percent for detecting adenomas larger than 1 cm. Only 23 adenomas larger than 1 cm were detected among the seven participating institutions, and most were between 11 and 15 mm (Stewart E: personal communication).
