To the Editor: In their study of plasma levels of factor VIII in relation to recurrent venous thrombosis, Kyrle et al. (Aug. 17 issue)1 demonstrate the value of measuring factor VIII for predicting the risk of recurrence of thrombosis. However, some important issues need clarification.

The authors used C-reactive protein as a marker of acute inflammation to rule out transient elevations in factor VIII levels. No effort seems to have been made to rule out liver disease, which is a common cause of elevated factor VIII levels.2 The levels of von Willebrand factor and the blood group are other determinants . . .
